The "Hope" Conference: History and Purpose

For 15 years, communication teacher-scholars from institutions focused on undergraduate instruction met at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. This will be the fifth year the conference will be hosted at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa . But in all other respects, the NCA Institute for Faculty Development (aka "The Hope Conference") remains the same. The purpose of this conference is, as it has been for almost two decades, to provide the background and strategies to address important issues and teach significant courses in our field.

Five days of seminars are scheduled to present current theory and research in relevant areas of the discipline. These topics are for the most part chosen from among the curricular goals that participants at the 2000 NCA Institute for Faculty Development selected as essential in the undergraduate curriculum.

Approximately 25 to 40 faculty, many from smaller institutions, will join with distinguished scholars in our field to study, discuss, exchange, and plan. Past years' experience shows that a sense of community builds during the conference along with networks of resources for research, inquiry, teaching, and curricular development. The "Hope Conference" is often just that-a source of hope, a place for finding colleagues, a haven for revitalizing ourselves and our careers.
